Antony felt out of place growing up in California. This was until he saw the image of Boy George on the cover of the Culture Club's 1982 debut album, "Kissing to Be Clever." Instantly he felt as though he had found his light. He moved to New York City in 1990 and entered a world where his thoughts, sensibilities and sexual ambiguity were more accepted.
He created a group called the "Blacklips" and created a image for himself resembling Isabella Rossellini and the drag queen. This was followed by the creation of Antony and the Johnsons. The band released their debut self titled album in 2000 on the Durtro label. Antony also appeared on a few Lou Reed albums, 'The Raven" and "Animal Serenade." He also embarked on a tour with Reed for the rest of 2003.
Antony has also featured in a motion picture. He starred in the movie Animal Serenade as a androgynous convict. Antony and the Johnsons released a few EP's and then came back with their second full length album, "I am a Bird Now" in 2005.
