What is up with this whole Joaquin Phoenix becoming a rapper? The music and entertainment industries are all a buzz because they believe the whole thing could be a hoax. Ok, let’s start at the beginning, back in October 2008, Phoenix stunned his fans with the announcement that he was retiring from acting. Interesting but ok if that is what he wants to do. Then he talks about how he is going to focus on his musical career, makes sense the man can sing. Remember his portrayal of Johnny Cash in “Walk the Line”? he was incredible. Here is the thing, the music he wants to focus on, is his Rap music. Ok, then. Have you gotten a look at him lately? He doesn’t look like a rapper to me. He looks like a scruffy old homeless man.

Super Bowl!!! After this incredible season in which the chi of the year was changed with the injury of Tom Brady, the NFL season has come down to a game between the 14-4 Pittsburgh Steelers dominating defense and the 12-7 Arizona Cardinals tremendous passing attack. To end it all, I have a few predictions to make.

Which is rarer, pure greatness or a great center? This question came up after Brian Schmitz of the Orlando Sentinel posted the vexing question in anticipation for the Cleveland Cavaliers-Orlando Magic game on Thursday night. Essentially the article was asking what is more valuable to a championship team, a player with pure greatness like LeBron James or a player with an incredible set of skills for a true center?

The two David’s from last season’s American Idol are at it again. It seems like literally almost moments apart both winner, David Cook, and runner up, David Archuleta, both announced solo tours. The girls are going to go crazy for these two boys and I mean boys...David Archuleta is just 17 and he is heading out on a 20 city tour starting February 24 and going through March 21. He will stick mostly to medium size theatres and House of Blues venues. Archie is also giving acting a try and will make a guest appearance the Nickelodeon’s show Icarly on February 7th. A cutie on a cute show.

Yesterday must have been a slow news day on the MLB scene. The only thing ESPN had to offer was a blurb about Joe Torre and his depiction of Alex Rodriguez in his new tell-all book about his time with the New York Yankees and the fact that Jerry Manuel would not mind having Manny Ramirez in the New York Mets outfield. Rather ho hum stories I thought, but then I began to make some connections and thought: why would Manuel want Ramirez?

I have one word for you – DIAPERS!!!!! Oh my goodness, today a woman gave birth to 8 babies near Los Angeles!! This is only the second time EVER that this has happened and the first time one of the babies ended up dying after a week. That was back in 1998 and now things are very different, and so far the babies seem to be doing quite well. I am practically hyperventilating for this woman. Yes it is an amazing thing that she grew 8 babies in her body but the reality of caring for them honestly seems like impossibility. I can’t stop thinking of the basics of caring for an instant family of 8 – especially newborns. One baby is overwhelming and difficult enough, add 7 more babies to feed, diaper, bathe and rock. Think of just getting those babies dressed and undressed. How will they fit into a car, much less taking them in and out of those pumpkin seats and strollers? How about dr. appointments, and going out to dinner. How about clothing and homework and taking the family to a movie? Ok ok I am getting ahead of myself but see, I said I was hyperventilating for them.

Why can’t we just have one awards show and call it a night? It just seems that once someone is nominated we just see the same thing over and over, whether it is at the Golden Globes, Sag Awards or the Oscars. There should be one awards show for TV, one for movies and one for music and be done? To have 100 awards shows basically honoring the same stuff and same people over and over is enough already.

Eddy Curry began his career as a big boy for the Chicago Bulls with a lot of potential. Now he is a big man for the New York Knicks with the world around him falling apart. He has dropped out of the rotation, been accused of sexual harassment by his former male limo driver, and recently found out that his former girlfriend and mother of his three-year-old son has been murdered.

Well it’s a shame, but no big surprises here, Kelly Osbourne checked back into rehab this week. At the age of 24, this is already the 3rd time she has been to rehab. Kelly checked herself in for a 30 day stay at an undisclosed location, although one possibility is a place in Oregon. Her publicist says she needs to “address some personal issues” and that is all that is really known at this point. Her family stands by her and is glad to see she is getting the help that she needs. About 5 years ago, Kelly was dealing with a pain killer addiction and was treated at the Promises rehab facility in California.

Good news and bad news for ”Dancing with the Stars” fans. Julianne Hough is opting for music over dancing. Instead of performing on the hit show, she is going on tour with Toby Keith, starting next month. Her first show will be February 6 in Louisville, Kentucky and then February 22, in Des Moines Iowa. Later this spring she will switch courses and be one of the opening acts for country great, George Strait, when he starts his summer tour in Charlotte, North Carolina on May 15th. Hough released her debut album last year and is very excited to focus on the next. She says she learned a lot by doing the first one but wants the next one to be even better. Hough got her big break on DWTS and won back to back seasons, #4 and #5. She was also the youngest professional dancer on the show. Her first win was with Apolo Anto Ohno, the Olympic Gold medal speed skater, and her next win was with Helio Castroneves, who is a 2 time Indianapolis 500 winner. So a good thing for Julianne, but she will surely missed this coming season.

Last season the Tampa Bay Rays came out of nowhere with god-like pitching, a little bit of power, and a whole lotta speed to shock every Yankees fan and die hard Red Sox faithful and win the American League East. They had the right elements and they came together at the right time. The club ultimately lost the World Series but still managed to shock the baseball-verse.

Some fun TV and Hollywood news to share today. To begin with the women of “Sex and the City” have all committed to be in the sequel. No dates have been set and there isn’t even a script but after making $150 million from the first one everyone is ready to do it again. IT’s being reported that all the women will be getting big raises too.

Well after a serious and monumental day of Inaugural celebrations, I think it is time to talk about something else. And what better topic to talk about then this year’s Razzie nominations. Now I am pretty sure many of these will come as no surprise but here are some of this year’s nominees. Mike Myers and his movie “The Love Guru” topped the Razzie list with 7 nominations, including Worst Picture, Worst Actor and Worst Actress. Not far behind with several nominations are Paris Hilton and her movie, “The Hottie and the Nottie”. Like I said no big surprises there. Paris was personally nominated for Worst Actress, as well as for Worst Picture.

It seems like the winter wasteland that blankets the top half of this country is so intense that few things can bring a solid group of sports fans together. There is the Super Bowl, which is on February 1st this year, but little else seems to excite a nation that lives to love sports.

Does great offense trump great defense? Anybody in Chicago who watched Michael Jordan terrorize the league’s best perimeter defenders every night would say so. Anyone who has watched Alex Rodriguez win intense battles at the plate for the New York Yankees against Cy Young winners would say so. Anybody who remembers the smooth skating of Wayne Gretzky would say so. So, in this upcoming Super Bowl will the explosive Cardinals offense be able to overcome the dominating Steelers defense?

Mariah Carey getting back on the acting horse again. After receiving dismal reviews from her last acting stint in the movie “Glitter”, Mariah Carey is giving acting another try in her newest movie, “Push”. The movie is currently being shown at the Sundance Film Festival and the movie and Mariah are getting great reviews. The movie, which is based on the book “Sapphire, “is a tough gritty movie and through the anger of the main character, hope is found. The story is about a teenage girl who is pregnant with her father’s child (again). She cannot read or write and her home life as one might imagine is unimaginable. She has a tyrant mother who is played by Mo’ Nique. The teenage girl, Precious Jones, is played by Gabourey Sidibe and is joined by Lenny Kravitz and Sherri Shepherd. The movie is direct by Lee Daniels who produced the movie “Monster’s Ball” – remember how they made Halle Berry look in that one?

The kids of America received their own Inaugural Concert this week sponsored by the Disney/ABC. Tonight was the “Kids’ Inaugural: We Are the Future” event. It aired live on the Disney channel, which by the way paid $2 million for the rights to do so to the Presidential Inaugural Committee. With a young president in the White House accompanied by his 2 young girls there have been several events geared toward the younger generation. That is one of the things that are so exciting about Obama, it is not just the adults that are taking an interest in our new president and politics but the teenagers and young adults are also showing their support and involvement as well.

Today was the first of many parites and celebrations this week in Washington . HBO broadcast live today from the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, where muscians, actors, athletes, comedians and politicians stood with the common people to welcome our new President into the White House.  This was an historical event that included actors reading monoluges about moments in history and shared quotes from famous former Presidents like FDR and Abraham Lincoln. Musicians chose amazing songs which lifted spirtis and brought everyone together. Some of the speakers included Steve Carell, Jamie Foxx, Tom Hanks, Ashley Judd, Denzel Washington, George Lopes, Forest Whitaker and Tiger Woods. Some of the musicians that performed were Garth Brooks, U2, Beyonce, Bon Jovi, John Mellencamp, Mary J. Blige and the boss himself, Bruce Springsteen.

Get ready girls, one of the biggest boy bands of all time is set to tour again in 2009! The New Kids on the Block are headlining their own tour starting this spring. It will actually be a fairly quick tour starting March 7th and going through until the end of the month. Some of the lucky cities include, Orlando, Nashville, Baltimore, Portland and Hidalgo Texas. There will be 15 cities in all. The boys were welcomed back with open arms when they appeared live for the first time together in 15 years on the “Today Show” last spring. It was like then never left. Their fans (although older) were as crazy for them today as they were back in the day. The only difference is that they brought their children with them.

Now that the only high seeded team left is the Pittsburgh Steelers I think it is official that all bets are off. Say what you will about the Steelers defense, the offense has been inconsistent and the playoffs, especially the conference championship, is no time to test your defenses ability to carry a game.

The newest batch of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees has been named. For the second time ever, a rapper is being honored into this prestigious group and that honor goes to Run – DMC. The first rapper was Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five back in 2007. Jeff Beck is being recognized for the second time. The first time he was recognized as part of the English Group the Yardbirds back in 1992, but this time he is being honored for his own work. The event takes place in Cleveland this year on April 4th where the Hall of Fame Museum is actually located. Since 1997 the event has taken place in New York City and this is the first time that the event will actually have tickets available to the public and not just the music industry big wigs.

First off, congratulations to Allison Sweeney, from The Biggest Loser, on the birth of her new daughter on Monday. Also nice job with the baby name, I am sure your daughter will appreciate a nice, pretty, normal name. Baby Sweeney is named Megan Hope, and she joins her 3 year old brother Ben. The Affleck’s however went a bit unusual with their new baby girl who also joins a 3 year sibling, Violet. Baby Affleck born in Los Angeles on January 6th, will be called Seraphina Rose. In other baby news, Carnie Wilson has shared the name of her new baby with the world while appearing on “The Bonnie Hunt Show”. Here is the thing, Carnie is not even due for another 5 months! She revealed that her new baby girl will be named Luciana, but they will call her Lucy. She will also join 3 year old sister, Lola. Chris Gorham from Ugly Betty welcomes baby number 3, this time a girl who joins a family of boys. Their new baby girl is named, Alondra. And last but not least 22 year old singer, Charlotte Church, named her newborn boy, Dexter – urgh!

Twenty-three. Yes, twenty three. I am not chanting Michael Jordan’s old number, but counting the number of three-point shots made by the Orlando Magic Tuesday night against the Sacramento Kings. The Magic hit 23 of 37 shots from beyond the arc to set an NBA record for the most triples made by a team in a single game. They were hitting shots from all over the place and nine players helped the Magic capture the record even after garbage time had started in the fourth quarter.

Singer songwriter, Joseph Brooks, has gotten himself into a lot of hot water lately. The 70 year old academy award winner is currently a suspect in 5 sexual assault complaints. This is the guy who wrote and directed the popular movie and even wrote the song for, “You Light Up My Life”. Didi Conn starred in the romantic comedy and the title song was sung by Debbie Boone. Do you remember that one from the 70’s?

How could I not start the day without commenting and sharing news about the Golden Globes? So let’s get to it. I am happy to say that I got a chance to see “Slumdog Millionaire” on Friday night and it so helped me appreciate the winner of Best Motion Picture which went to no other then “Slumdog Millionaire”. What an intense and excellent film. Best Actress finally went to Kate Winslet, in her role for “Revolutionary Road” as well as Best Supporting Actress in “The Reader”. This is actually only the 3rd time that one person has won 2 acting awards. It doesn’t get better then that!

The experts are dumbfounded and I am looking back at most post Friday and wondering how I could have been so blind. Surely, everybody in the Carolinas and Tennessee assumed they were going to have another week to find NFL Playoff tickets. Three of the four favored teams lost this weekend. The Ravens started out by surprising the Titans 13-10, then Cardinals embarrassed the Panthers 33-13, and the upsets were capped off by the Eagles delivering the emotional defeat of the New York Giants 23-11. Only the Pittsburgh Steelers were able to take advantage of home field advantage in a 35-24 win over the San Diego Chargers that was much more one-sided than the score reveals.

Kanye West and Nicole Kidman both gave me a good laugh this weekend and made me say…poor them. Let’s start with Kanye West who said in an interview with Vibe magazine, for their February issue, that he wants “less fans”. He says he wants a “low key career like Bjork”. Really?? He should have thought about that before maybe headlining for Lollapalooza, releasing 4 major albums and producing music for performers like Alicia Keys and Janet Jackson. He gives the example that he would rather have 20,000 fans that really get him and his music vs. 100,000 fans that just like him because he is the hot guy of the moment. Pretty profound huh? He worked his whole life to become rich and famous and now he wants less. Spoken like a true artist. He wants his music to be appreciated and not just out there to be listened to lightly. I wonder what his plan is to accomplish fewer fans.

Well the wait is finally over…the new cast of Celebrity Apprentice has been announced and it is a doozie of a list. The new group of 16 “celebrities” are mostly names from the the late 80”s. The show will take place in New York, and although the title says apprentice, lucky for Trump, none of these people will have to work for him. All their winnings will go to the charity of their choice which is probably the best part of the show.

Yes, the Florida Gators won their second BCS championship with a 24-14 victory over the Oklahoma Sooners. The season’s end was of course embroiled in the controversy, for the sixth time in 10 years (I thought the new system was supposed to clear up the confusion not further institutionalize it). There are loud voices of outrage…again.

This time the argument is that the Utah Utes have been robbed of the college championship for the second time (the first time was in 2004). Luckily my preference for the professional game really pays off this time of the year. It is not a bowl committee deciding which single game decides the “best” team, but NFL Playoff tickets that will give a definitive answer.

Led Zeppelin is back…sans Robert Plant. More than a year ago, after the Ahmet Ertegun Tribute Concert, Led Zeppelin took the stage with Jason Bonham respectively taking his father’s place on drums. The rumors of a reunion persisted, but ultimately it was Robert Plant who laid them to rest, insisting that he was only concerned with his work with Alison Krauss.

The 35th Annual People’s Choice Awards were held Wednesday night at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. The 2 hour even was hosted by Queen Latifah. The first presenter of the night was supposed to be presented by Kate Hudson, but she was stuck in that darn L.A. traffic and didn’t make it in time. So funny lady Ellen DeGeneres graciously stepped in and gave out t the first award for “favorite funny male star” to no other then Adam Sandler. Kate Hudson did eventually make it and she herself won the award for “favorite leading lady”. She even dedicated her award to Ryder, her son, who turned 5 that day.

Love her or hate her, Ann Coulter returned to the Today show, in New York, this morning amidst all the rumors that she had been banned for life. Helping fuel the rumors were the facts that she was cancelled on Tuesdays show where she was replaced by Tony Blair, who was giving a live report  from Israel about what is going on in Gaza. That news story got her bumped and she took it personally. I have to say Matt Lauer called her on it because really what is more important, her and her new book, or the conflict in Israel? But she couldn’t see that. She fought him on the point but in the end she said she was glad to be there and to have not been banned. She is one tough lady and her mission was to promote her book which she did.

The Boston Celtics started 27-2 and looked like they were going to be the team to beat the Chicago Bulls historic 72-10 season in 1995-96. This week’s celebrity fight is between Howard Stern and Jay Leno. These guys have never exactly been pals and have had words in the past but here is the gist of the current debate. IT seems that Jay made some comments back in mid. December about Howards move to Sirius and how he didn’t think it was a smart move on Howard’s part. Jay feels that when Howard used to be on mainstream radio people were talking about him and what he had said that morning on the air, but now that he is at Sirius and has fewer listeners that he really doesn’t hear much anymore. Jay made his original comments to the New York Times and then those comments resurfaced again in a separate article at the end of December in the New York Times again, but this time in the business section, in an article about how Sirius is hurting and having a hard time making a profit.

Well after the sadness of the Jett Travolta story yesterday, we are going to talk about love and babies because that seems to be the big news in Hollywood today. Let’s start with Jerry O’Connell and Rebecca Romijn who welcomed fraternal twin girls on December 28th. And yes, you can be rest assured they have selected some interesting names, good enough to have those girls fitting right into the Hollywood scene. First off, the girls each have 3 names, not including their last names, that both end with flowers. Have I peaked your curiosity…. Charlie (named after Jerry’s twin brother) Tamara Tulip, and Dolly (yes as in Parton) Rebecca Rose. Need I say more? Mom and babies are all doing well.

Lollapalooza is here to stay for at least another 10 years. Chicago has been the music festivals current home since the show was revived in 2005 and it is here to stay until at least 2018. Grant Park has been the festival grounds and so far has generated over $4 million that goes to the park district. With this new contract the city is hoping to generate more than $12 million. Those should be some awesome parks for the kids in Chicago, don’t you think?

I hate to start the New Year off with sad news but this has been on my mind since I heard about it earlier today. John Travolta and Kelly Preston’s 16 year old son, Jett, died today.
The family was on vacation in the Bahamas where they have a home, celebrating the New Year together. It seems that Jett had a seizure while in the bathtub, fell and hit his head. I cannot even imagine what this family is going through right now and I am just so sad for them. The couple also has an 8 year old daughter, Ella Bleu.

New Years Day kicked off 2009 with a familiar tradition, a Big Ten team showing up a lame duck to the Rose Bowl. This time it was Penn State lost badly to USC by a score of 38-24. The halftime score was 31-7, so the final score really did Penn State more justice than they really deserve. The chatter was that this was the game that would decide whether the Big Ten was a major joke or a major conference. At 1-5 so far, with one game left the Big Ten is officially an invalid of a conference.

Of course it was Seacrest! With Dick Clarks name in front of him, “Dick Clarks New Years Rockin” Eve with Ryan Seacrest” continued as the number #1 most watched New Years Eve special. I mean really, is it New Years without Dick and Ryan? Carson Daly though is working it and is the main New Years special competitor out there these days. This year was however the lowest rated Rockin’ Eve special since the year 2000 and it is too soon to tell if that is because viewers have tuned into to Daly’s show. Those numbers should be out next week. Dick Clark is pretty amazing because he has hosted 36 out of the last 37 shows and he only missed the one due to the stroke he suffered back in 2004. Although everyone loves Dick Clark, it is hard to see him aging and slowing down in a show that is promoting hope and new beginnings of the coming year.

The one and done feature after 17 weeks of jarring hits, needless holding calls, and general professional football drama is set to start this weekend. It is almost fitting that the second chapter of the NFL should begin the first week of the New Year. The only thing that matters from the 16 previous regular season games and the pointless four preseason contests only matter in the respect that they got these 12 teams here.
