The Brickyard 400 is the annual 400-mile NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Indianapolis, Indiana. When originally run in 1994, that inaugural race marked the first time since 1916, other than the Indianapolis 500, that a race was held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Since that first race, the Brickyard 400 – also known as the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard between 2005 and 2009 – has become NASCAR's most-attended event, annually bringing in an estimated crowd of more than 250,000 spectators, while also having the distinction as NASCAR's second highest paying race, behind the Daytona 500.

The term "Brickyard" refers to the nickname which has historically been used for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway since 1910; originally completely paved in brick in 1909, the course still maintains a three foot strip of exposed brick at the track's start/finish line.

The 2007 Brickyard 400 was the scene of a couple of notable milestones for one driver, as Juan Pablo Montoya became the first, and only driver to date, to race in all three of the major events ever hosted at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway – the Indianapolis 500, the Brickyard 400, and the U.S. Grand Prix. Montoya, a Sprint Cup Series rookie at the time, also finished second behind Tony Stewart in that race, thus wrapping up quite a day for the racer.

The 2009 Brickyard 400 also involved former Indy 500 winner Juan Pablo Montoya once again. Having dominated for most of the race – leading for 116 laps – Montoya received a penalty for speeding through pit lane with only 35 laps to go; a violation which resulted with Jimmie Johnson holding off the initial pole-sitter, Mark Martin, for the checkered flag.
