The CARFAX 400 is the second Sprint Cup Series stock car date on the Michigan International Speedway calendar in Brooklyn, Michigan, with the first being the Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips 400 in June. Introduced as a 600-mile race in 1969, the race was shortened to 330 miles due to rain, resulting in it permanently being reduced to a 400-mile race, and held as such ever since. Since the inaugural event in 1969, there has only been one year in which the race did not take place; in 1973 the race was not held due to owner Roger Penske deciding to replace the Yankee 400 NASCAR race with an IndyCar race.

From 1998 to 2002, the CARFAX 400 was known as the Pepsi 400 but also carried a secondary sponsor's name attached to the event – "…Presented by DeVilbiss", "…Presented by Meijer", "…Presented by Farmer Jack" – most likely to avoid confusion with the Daytona race of the same name at the time, which is now known as the Coke Zero 400. For 2007, the race was renamed the 3M Performance 400 when 3M and Post-it transferred their sponsorship from the Citizens Bank 400 to the August race.
