The race has been run under a few other names since its inception in 1949, but has included the Goody's name in the title from 1996 to 2000, and then again from the 2007 event to the present. When those who are really in-the-know think of NASCAR auto racing, they most likely automatically think of Goody's pain relief products as well. In the early days of stock car racing, a friendly fan base at a local track near Winston-Salem inspired Goody's to support their weekly Saturday night races, which led to one of their first programs; the presentation of the "Goody's Headache Award" to the driver or team which, unfortunately, suffered the greatest misfortune that week. Later, in 1977, Goody's really joined the big-time by signing Richard Petty as their spokesperson, and becoming one of NASCAR's first sponsors with a non-auto-related product. Besides being considered the undisputed "King" of NASCAR, Richard Petty is a longtime user and advocate of Goody's pain relief products.

 The Goody's Fast Relief 500 is 263 miles of heart pounding action, and is one of two races held at the very popular short track of Martinsville Speedway; the other being the Tums Fast Relief 500 held annually in October. Race fans are always in for a great time at the speedway, as Martinsville is not only the shortest track in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, but the track's long straights and flat narrow turns always provide hard breaking, smooth accelerations, and breathtaking race action! In the 2007 race, Jimmie Johnson was victorious in the first ever running of the Goody's at Martinsville in the new Car of Tomorrow. Johnson is also the defending champ, after having won the most recent race again in 2009. Even though the Goody's Fast Pain Relief 500 is at the beginning of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season, drivers and their teams are looking for valuable Cup championship points, so the action is usually fast and furious.
