The Indy Grand Prix of Alabama will be a new event added to the 2010 schedule for IndyCar racing fans. The addition of the race has been a huge victory for the city of Birmingham even before the first race has even officially been run. The race is expected to add $30 million to the area around the Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, AL. The first race will take place on April 11, 2010 on the 2.3 mile long track, with harrowing twists and turns.
The officials at Barber Motorsports Park believed they would be added to the 2009 IndyCar schedule, but were beat out by two other new locations, street tracks in Long Beach and Toronto. That optimism came after a successful three-day test run at the track on October 12, 2007. An additional test run in March 2009 once again rose a bit of hope and this time that hope was fulfilled.
IndyCar decided to adopt the Indy Grand Prix of Alabama after the closing of the Detroit Indy Grand Prix. In search of another track race, Birmingham suddenly found the Barber Motorsports Park in the running again. The Birmingham facility beat out tracks in Cleveland, Baltimore, Nashville, Charlotte, Baltimore, and Portland for the honor.
