Hosted annually at the 1.5-mile Charlotte Motor Speedway (known as the Lowe's Motor Speedway from 1999-2009) in Concord, North Carolina, the 334-lap NASCAR Banking 500 is usually held in the month of October and, if you do the math, is actually 501 miles in length, while prior to 1966 the race was a 400-mile event. Following the 2002 running of the NASCAR Banking 500, it was decided to move the race from Sunday to Saturday; an unexpected later broadcast, as a result of a three-hour rain delay, provided good primetime ratings during the event, which led track officials to move the 2003 race from Sunday afternoon to Saturday night, where it has remained ever since.

 In 2005, in yet another television-related event, the start of the race was delayed by the finish of the Notre Dame-Southern California college football game which ran late. With the game in its final minutes, NBC – the broadcaster of both events – had the racers start their engines and begin the pre-race pace laps. Just as the pace car left the track onto pit road, which signals the start the race, NBC had just switched over from the game to the race, and the Banking 500 broadcast began just as the field took the green flag, and with NASCAR fans not missing a single lap. Having been in existence since the inaugural National 400 in 1960, this race has seen many legendary NASCAR participants and champions race here at the historic Charlotte Motor Speedway. Now that the NASCAR Banking 500 Only from Bank of America is smack dab in the middle of the Chase for the Cup "playoffs", race fans should really order tickets to see how the next Banking 500 turns out on Saturday night, October 16, 2010.
