Watkins Glen Grand Prix Tickets The Watkins Glen Grand Prix has been a staple in open wheel racing since the dominant league was Formula One. The track at Watkins Glen International is renowned for its boot and the many slight turns that make this a much needed improvement on the circular and oval tracks of NASCAR, favoring skill over straight away speed. The race history is one that wanes with the popularity of racing throughout American culture. The race began as part of the CART series, but as the league moved closer and closer to folding the race faced a similar fate. By 1981, the Champ Cart had left the race off the circuit. The Watkins Glen International took on the role as a host for minor races in minor leagues. Then in 1986, NASCAR began to bring the sport of automobile racing back into the forefront. Fans began clamoring for another race at the unique set of twists and turns that could normally only be found on a street course. By 2005, the IRL IndyCar series opened the major racing season at the Watkins Glen International again with the Watkins Glen Grand Prix.

 The long track had few straight-aways that allowed for more skillful driving in hairpin turns to prove dominant. The 3.403-mile track is so long that the race is just 60 miles long. Scott Dixon of New Zealand took the first race driving for the Chip Ganassi Racing team. The next year he repeated as champion for the next two years. Then, in 2008 Ryan Hunter-Reay broke his streak with a victory of as an American for the Rahal Letterman Racing team. Justin Wilson took the pole in 2009 racing for Dale Coyne Racing.
