‘Balingen’ is the capital city of Zollernalbkreis district in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. This city is situated approximately 35 km to the south of Tübingen, 35 km northeast of Villingen-Schwenningen, and 60 km southwest of Stuttgart in the Swabian Alb.

One of the 16 states of the Federal Republic of Germany, Baden-Württemberg is in the southwestern part of the country to the east of the Upper Rhine. This state is the third largest in both area and population among the sixteen states of the country with an area of 35,742 square kilometers and 10.7 million inhabitants.

A combination of historical states of Baden, Hohenzollern and Württemberg, this state is part of the Swabia region. Allied forces had established three states after World War II including Württemberg-Hohenzollern and South Baden that were then occupied by France, and Württemberg-Baden, which was under the US possession. They became part of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1949. These states were merged on April 25, 1952 into Baden-Württemberg.

Balingen was mentioned in the history for the first time in 863. This locality was initially under the possession of the lords of Haigerloch. It was acquired by the count of Hohenberg in 1162, and received the title of a city from Friedrich der Erlauchte in 13th century. It was rather rebuilt on the left bank of the river Eyach and sold to the County of Württemberg in 1403.

This city became part of an unified Germany in 1870. A sub-camp of Flossenburg concentration camp was located here during World War II. It had to face its biggest setback on 1809, when a fire destroyed it completely. The entire city was burnt except a Protestant church, the castles and a few other edifices. Construction work of the Protestant church had finished here in 1541. The castle was later demolished in 1935. Now only a tower can be seen at that place.

Baden-Württemberg shares both Lake Constance (Bodensee) and the foothills of the Alps with Switzerland. The Danube River has its source in Baden-Württemberg near Donaueschingen town.
