The town of ‘Bamberg’ is part of Bavaria in Germany. It is located in the Upper Franconia on river Regnitz. It is close to its confluence with the Main River. Bamberg is one of those cities of Germany that was not destroyed in the World War II bombings. It accommodates nearly 7,000 foreigners, including over 4,100 from the United Army.

The region included the Diocese of Bamberg during post-Roman centuries of Germanic migration. It was once inhabited by the Slavs. This entire area has been Christianized chiefly by the monks of Benedictine Abbey of Fulda. It was under the spiritual authority of the Diocese of Würzburg. King of the Romans, Henry II made Bamberg a family inheritance and the seat of a separate diocese in 1007. The boundaries of the new diocese were defined after long negotiations with the Bishops of Würzburg and Eichstätt in 1008. The Pope John XVIII granted the papal confirmation in the same year. Henry II built a new cathedral on May 6, 1012 in dedication.

It was in 1844 that Bamberg was connected with the German rail system for the first time. Bavaria passed its first republican constitution in Bamberg that became the Bamberger Verfassung or Bamberg Constitution. This city celebrated its 1000th founding anniversary in 1973. The University of Bamberg was founded here as an Academia Bambergensis in 1647. The possessions and jurisdictions of the diocese situated in Austria were sold to that State in 1759. The diocese covered 3,305 km² when the secularization of church lands took place in 1802. Bamberg lost its independence in 1802 and became part of Bavaria in 1803.

Currently Bamberg is home to nine traditional breweries that include Brauerei Fässla, Brauerei Greifenklau, Brauerei Heller-Trum, Brauerei Kaiserdom, Keesmann Bräu, Klosterbräu, Mahrs Bräu, Maisel Bräu and Brauerei Spezial and one modern brewpub Ambräusianum. Bamberg extends over seven hills, each crowned by a beautiful church that has led it to being called the Franconian Rome.
