Densely populated ‘Barcelona’ is the capital city of autonomous Catalonia. It is the second largest city in Spain, and the centre point of the Urban Region of Barcelona. This city is located on the Mediterranean coast between the conglomeration of the rivers Llobregat and Besòs until limiting its area to the west by Serra de Collserola ridge.

Barcelona emerged as an important economic centre in Europe with one of its major Mediterranean ports. Its International Airport is the second largest airport of Spain. This city was founded as a Roman city that later became the capital of Counts of Barcelona. This city became one of the most important cities of the Crown of Aragon after merging with the Kingdom of Aragon. It is well-known for being an important cultural centre and a major tourist destination. With this rich cultural heritage, this city always remains in the limelight. The city had hosted the 1992 Summer Olympics.

Located on the northeast coast of the Iberian Peninsula, Barcelona faces Mediterranean Sea on a plateau approximately 5 km wide by the mountain range of Collserola. The Llobregat River is in its southwest and the Besòs River is in the north. Another attribute of Barcelona is it is peppered with small hills. The municipalities of Santa Coloma de Gramenet and Sant Adrià de Besòs to the north; L'Hospitalet de Llobregat and Esplugues de Llobregat to the south; the Mediterranean Sea to the east and Montcada i Reixac and Sant Cugat del Vallès to the west is the surrounding borders of this city.

According to 2006 census estimates, Barcelona has the population of 1,605,602 people. Over 95% of its population is at home in speaking the native Catalan language. Over 74.6% can speak it easily, 75% can read it and 47.1% can write it. Although huge number of its population is Roman Catholic, there are also a number of many other religious groups including Evangelical, Jehovah's Witnesses and Buddhists. The city has a growing number of Muslims as well.
