Batesville Information: Tickets, Venues, Events and More

‘Batesville’ is an oldest existing city of the Arkansas State. The Osage Indians ceded this territory to the USA through a treaty of 1808. This territory did not come under the Indian control since then. But a portion of it, particularly its southern area at the river, remained under the possession of the Cherokee Indians from 1808 to 1817.

History defines that this city existed fewer than three names that were Napoleon, Poke Creek and its last and the now existing name Batesville that was given in the honour of Judge James Woodson Bates, the first Territorial Delegate to Congress.

The inhabitants of Batesville had their principal trade to supply the settlers with groceries and provisions during its early existence. It was done so to have the hides and furs from countless wild animals of that time that were taken on the exchange basis.

Batesville became county seat in 1821. The first court of common please was held here in November 19, 1821 under Judge Richard Peel and William Moore presiding it. This was the only court until April 29, 1830. This first county court was held by James Boswell.

This city had its first post office in 1822. It was in 1833 that Aaron W. Lyon arrived at Batesville and engaged himself in the teaching activities for several years. But he chose the mercantile business in 1842. Lyon was one of the trustees of the Batesville Academy. It was the first academy to be incorporated in the state. Governor Conway passed this bill on September 26, 1836. It was in 1831 that the first steamboat visited Batesville when Captain Pennywit arrived in this city with the Steamer Waverly.

At present Batesville has the population of over 9,000 people. This city has abundant natural resources including water, climate, location, minerals and timber that help its growth in each sphere. This city has diverse economy with well established industries, agriculture and tourism.
