‘Belfast’ is the capital city of Northern Ireland and second largest in Ireland after Dublin. The county borough of Belfast was revamped into town in County Antrim when Queen Victoria granted it the status of city in 1888.
Belfast is an anglicised version of Irish Béal Feirste meaning ‘Mouth of the Farset.’ The terminology refers to sand bar formed at the rendezvous between River Farset conjoining with River Lagan. This city is also famous as Donegall Quay flowing into Belfast Lough.
This city dates back to the Bronze Age. It was a tiny settlement when John de Courcy built a castle in 12th century. It is now famous as Castle Street. It became a substantial settlement in 17th century. The Society of United Irishmen was founded here in 1791.
Belfast grew as a commercial centre in 18th and 19th centuries and became an industrial hub of Ireland when industries thrived here. It was home to linen, rope-making, tobacco and heavy engineering and shipbuilding industries. This city briefly overtook Dublin as the biggest city of Ireland in 19th century. The Harland and Wolff shipyards attained the position of largest shipbuilder in the world. German bombers bombed Belfast during World War II in 1941, which killed approximately one thousand civilians and left tens of thousands homeless.
This city was a capital of Northern Ireland since its establishment in 1921. It was planned following the Government of Ireland Act in 1920. It encountered sectarian conflicts between Roman Catholics and Protestants. The opposing groups were termed republicans and loyalists respectively. They were referred to as nationalists and unionists. It faced another worst trouble in 1970 when rival paramilitary groups captured it. It followed with bombings, assassinations and street violence.
Presently, Belfast has a mayoral form of municipal government. Its officials are Lord Mayor, Deputy Lord Mayor and High Sheriff. All three are elected from among the fifty-one councilors. Daniel Dixon was the first Lord Mayor of Belfast in 1892. Sinn Féin is its current Lord Mayor and Tom Hartley is the second Sinn Féin Lord Mayor.
