‘Bemidji’ is a city cum Beltrami County in Minnesota, the USA. It is situated on the southwest shore of Lake Bemidji and northernmost Lake of Mississippi River. It is considered ‘the first city on Mississippi.’

The name of this city is derived from the Ojibwe Bay-may-ji-ga-maug means ‘lake that traverses another body of water.’ At times it is called Wabigamaang to its being part of the city situated on the Lakes Bemidji/Irving narrows. It is located on the south end of Lake Bemidji and extends to the eastern shore of Lake Irving.

Bemidji is home to several reputed educational institutions including the Bemidji State University, Northwest Technical College and Oak Hills Christian College. This city also headquarters the Bemidji Woolen Mills. The Lake Bemidji State Park offers year-round recreation. This city is home to one of the five flight bases in the state for North Memorial Medical Center of Robbinsdale, MeritCare Clinic and North Country Health Services. This city is home base for the group of sixteen radio stations, Paul Bunyan Broadcasting at Baxter, Wadena and Alexandria.

As per the US Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 12.9 square miles, of which, 11.8 square miles is land and 1.2 square miles is water. This city encountered the largest earthquake on record on September 3, 1917. It shook the houses down in Bemidji and across the northern Minnesota. Its epicenter was about 95 miles away in Staples affecting an area of 48,000 km².

According to 2000 census, this city has 13,419 inhabitants, 4,669 households and 2,427 families residing in the city circles. It has the population density of 1,011.8 inhabitants per square mile and 4,948 housing units at an average density of 420.1/sq mi. Its racial makeup is 84.31% White Americans, 0.76% African Americans, 11.52% Native Americans, 1.12% Asians, 0.03% Pacific Islanders, 0.20% from miscellaneous races and 2.06% from two or more races. The city has 1.14% Hispanic or Latino population.

Bemidji has the sex ratio of 87.1 males for every 100 females, and for every 100 females aged 18 and above, it has 83.0 males.
