‘Bensheim’ is a town of the Bergstraße district in southern Hesse, Germany. Situated at the edge of Odenwald Mountains, this city is considered the biggest town of the district with its approximate population of 40,000.

Located at the eastern edge of the Rhine rift on western slopes of Odenwald, its nearest cities are Darmstadt at 22 km to the north, Heidelberg at 35 km to the south, Worms at 18 km to the west and Mannheim at 32 km to the southwest. Lauter River flows through Bensheim from the Lauter valley from east. Another river, Meerbach runs in the southern part of this town that comes from Odenwald.

Bensheim is renowned for its peculiar mild and sunny climate with roughly 2,000 hours of yearly sunshine. It is famous for having earliest onset of spring. Kiwifruit, almonds figs and peaches thrive here under the Odenwald’s protection. They give Bergstraße the nickname ‘Germany’s Riviera.’ It is famous for almond tree cultivation. There is even a Blütenkönigin (Blossom Queen) in Bensheim each year that is put forth by the Bensheim Automobile Club. It has become a hallmark for Bensheim for decades in both within the country and abroad as well. This city has developed from a tiny village to a big town. It has a rich history since 8th century. Bensheim was granted the right of township in the 14th century.

A bigger portion of its old part was destroyed by the incendiary bombs on March 26, 1945. The South Hesse area of this city was inhabited quite early. The naming process of this city has gone through interesting phases. It was renamed from Basinsheim to Basinusheim and then to Besensheim, and finally Bensheim over the centuries.

Bensheim was merged with Landratsbezirk of Heppenheim in 1832 to form Bensheim district with Bensheim as its seat. It is also part of the economically strong Rhine Neckar Area. The city is renowned as a middle centre in the South Hesse regional planning. By now this city has developed good economic data. It has above-average employment figures and has good number of graduates.
