Bon Iver concert tickets have been around since 2007, as the project undertaken by folk singer-songwriter Justin Vernon. He recruited Sean Carey and Matthew McCaughan to play with him on stage. The trio became a standard four-piece band with the addition of Michael Noyce, who Vernon had taught guitar when he was in high school. This Eau Claire, Wisconsin band quickly emerged on the indie rock scene. Now Bon Iver has played Lollapalooza in 2009 and at the Austin City Limits Music Festival, Bonnaroo, Glastonbury, Way Out West, and the Sasquatch! music festival.

Bon Iver's story goes farther back than this 2007 meeting. Justin Vernon moved back to Wisconsin after he had left the band DeYarmond Edison and a ended his relationship in Raleigh, North Carolina (and endured a battle with mononucleosis). He stayed in his father's cabin in the woods in northern Wisconsin and watched Northern Exposure on DVD. It was one particular episode that inspired the name for the group, one in which the town people were greeting each other "bon hiver". A poor transcription later, Vernon had discovered the name for his new band.
