Bonnie Prince Billy is the latest musical persona adopted by Will Oldham. Oldham has been mentioned in the same breath as Americana, folk, root, country, punk, and indie rock. He denies such generalizations, only accepting that he sells ticket to shows where he plays music that is definitely influenced by Western popular music.
With each new album he takes a different name. Oldham says that this breaks that undeniable tendency by audiences to expect the same thing from the same name. He changes names as he changes his touring and recording company. In 2009 he is releasing his newest album, Beware, under the moniker Bonnie Prince Billy, a name inspired by Nat King Cole, Bonnie Prince Charlie, and Billy the Kid.

 As Bonnie Prince Billy, Will Oldham has scheduled 40 concert dates on a tour that begins March 12 at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater in Bloomington, Indiana and ends June 6 at the Granada Theater in Dallas, Texas.
