The Symphony Hall plays official host to two of the best known orchestras in the world- The Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Pops Orchestra. The Boston Symphony Orchestra is one of the finest in the world, best known for its stellar string section. It has a rich history of music and magic that spans over a hundred years and is still going strong today. The Boston Pops orchestra was formed as an offshoot to the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1885 and is known for playing lighter, more popular classical fare.
Originally, the Boston Symphony Orchestra performed at the Old Boston Music Hall, where the orchestra had its first ever concert. In 1893 the Hall was threatened by a city project that planned on expanding and updating road transit. The orchestra's founder Henry Lee Higginson immediately set in motion a plan to construct a brand new home for the orchestra. This would not be just any old hall- like the Boston Symphony Orchestra itself, the Symphony Hall would be an outstanding structure, one of the best in the world.

Artist Biography - Boston Symphony Hall Anniversary
|
In order to bring the project to life, a young assistant professor of physics from no less a place than Harvard, was engaged by the architects to ensure that the Hall was an acoustically unique structure. Because of this, Symphony Hall became the first ever auditorium to be designed with scientific acoustics in mind. There are a number of features that make the Symphony Hall acoustically superior to many other halls. The walls of the stage were constructed to slope inward, thus focusing the sound. The balconies are shallow so that they do not trap any sound and features like the gaps in the coffered ceiling and the niches with statues along the three sides help to distribute the sound.
There are a number of Greek and Roman statues that are each related to some aspect of music, art or literature. The Symphony Hall organ is one of the best of its kind- it is an Aeolian Skinner installed in 1949. There are also a number of plaques that trim the stage and balconies. Only one of them holds a name- that name is Beethoven and his name appears because it was believed that only his music would remain popular. Symphony Hall recently held its centennial celebrations amidst much fanfare.
