The Boston Symphony was also responsible, to some extent, for the creation of WGBH Radio which was an outlet for its concerts.
Koussevitzky used to place an order for several new pieces from notable composers, which includes the Fourth Symphony of Sergei Prokofiev and the Symphony of Psalms by Igor Stravinsky. They also used to give the premiere of Béla Bartók's Concerto for Orchestra, which was commissioned by the Koussevitzky Foundation, on the request of Fritz Reiner and Joseph Szigeti.

On many other occasions, they have also commissioned works from several other composers, such as John Corigliano's 2nd symphony for the 100th anniversary of Symphony Hall.
In the year 1949, Koussevitzky was succeeded by Charles Munch. For the first time, the orchestra under the leadership of Munch played in other parts of the world also. In the year 1954, the orchestra did their first stereo recording for RCA Victor. In the year 1962, he was succeeded by Erich Leinsdorf. Leinsdorf left in the year 1969 and was succeeded by William Steinberg. In the year 1973, Seiji Ozawa succeeded Steinberg and remained the Music Director till the year 2002. Ozawa was the longest serving conductor of Boston Symphony. James Levine, the first American-born conductor, succeeded him.
The Boston Symphony is also closely associated with the New England Conservatory and thus enjoys its close association with the Conservatory. It then located one block from Symphony Hall. Most of the players of the BSO's are graduates from the New England Conservatory. From the year 1904 till 1910, Willy Hess, the famous violin virtuoso was the concertmaster.
The Boston Pops Orchestra, which is a part of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, plays more popular classics, show and lighter tunes. The Tanglewood Festival Chorus performs major choral works with the BSO and Boston Pops. The Chorus was organized by John Oliver, its founding director, in the year 1970. The Chorus consists of two hundred fifty volunteer singers.
