Born on 11th August 1978, in Little Rock, Arkansas, Jermain Taylor is a graduate of McClellan Magnet High School, Class of 1997. Since his childhood, Jermain Taylor had to work hard to support himself and his three younger sisters, as his father abandoned them. Forced into the role of "man of the house", he had a tough time. At the age of 13, his uncle introduced him to the boxing world. The boxing bug hit him though, and he began to take interest in learning the minor tactics of boxing and competing in the ring.

 His amateur career began with the 1996 Under-19 Championship, and he was also the winner of a pair of PAL Championships and National Golden Gloves titles. He was placed at second and third position respectively at the 1997 and 1998 U.S. Championships respectively. His next level of amateur career was the bronze medal at the 1998 U.S. Championships. While competing in the 1998 "Boxer of the Year" award in Texas, Jermain Taylor was at an impressive 6th position out of 452 entries. It was not that easy to get there, he piled up victory after victory. He became the first boxer from Arkansas to compete in the Olympic games. At the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia, he won the bronze medal. He defeated Dmitri Usagin, Scott MacIntosh, and Adnan Catic to win the title.
In his professional boxing career, Jermain Taylor has dominated all of his opponents very easily with his outstanding hold in the game. He won matches against fighters like Raul Marquez and William Joppy. On February 19, 2005, in a very important match, Jermain Taylor defeated the unbeaten Daniel Edouard with a TKO in round 3. This historic win gave a new hype to his boxing career. He earned a title bout against Bernard Hopkins, who had four major world middleweight titles to his credit and was rated #1 boxer in the world by Ring Magazine. Nonetheless, when Jermain Taylor won the fight against Bernard Hopkins at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, NV, by a 12 round split decision, he become the new undisputed middleweight champion. He defended his title again in 2006, first in Memphis, on June 2, 2006 in a controversial draw against Winky Wright, and last on 9 December 2006 when he defeated former champion Kassim Ouma in Little Rock. This year, Jermain Taylor again retained the title by defeating Cory Spinks on May 19, 2007.
