Buffalo Springfield, the folk rock group whose influence far at lasted the band's actual existence, is reuniting for a tour in 2011. Neil Young will take a break from his solo tour to perform with Richie Furay and Stephen Stills of the original lineup and drummer Joe Vitale and bassist Rick Rosas, who replace original members who either deceased or remain disgruntled. Buffalo Springfield History
Buffalo Springfield formed way back in 1966 after an illegal u-turn on the expressway in Los Angeles. Neil Young and Bruce Palmer headed out to Los Angeles in search of Stephen Stills, who Young had met a year earlier. Stills had been recruiting members for a new band following the breakup of his former group, the Company. Young and Palmer were actually leaving L.A. after giving up hope of finding the elusive Stills. Stills saw him from the opposite side of the expressway and the rest is history. Young, Stills, Furray, Palmer, and eventually drummer Dewey Martin formed Buffalo Springfield.
The band began playing together live immediately, first opening for the Dillards and the Byrds. The second set of live performances was a series of incredible gigs as the house band at the Whiskey a Go Go. Buffalo Springfield recorded three albums together (Buffalo Springfield, Buffalo Springfield Again, and Last Time Around) and is best known historically for the anti-war anthem "For What It's Worth".
However, while Buffalo Springfield would remain an influential band for years, the band itself fell into dysfunction as infighting and terrible band management broke the group up just two years later. The last Buffalo Springfield tickets of the era were sold for a concert in Long Beach at which the song "Bluebird" became the group's last song performed together live until the 21st century when the group reunited for the annual Bridge School Benefit in 2010 in Mountain View, California.
