The city of Carbondale is located in Jackson County, southern Illinois, United States. It is 96 miles away from southeast of Saint Louis, Missouri. As per the 2000 census, the city had a population of 25,597. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 12.1 square miles (31.4 km²), of which, 11.9 square miles (30.8 km²) of it is land and 0.2 square miles (0.6 km²) of it is water. The total area is 2.06% water.

Carbondale is famous for hosting a number of yearly festivals, such as the Lights Fantastic parade in December; the Big Muddy Film Festival in February/March, the Southern Illinois Irish Festival in April; the Main Street Pig Out, which is a barbecue-and-music festival celebrated in September; the Great Cardboard Boat Regatta; and the Sunset Concerts, a summer series of free outdoor concerts held on the Southern Illinois University campus and in city parks.

Carbondale is home to the Southern Illinois University, which has a number of sports teams. The teams are known as the Salukis. The Salukis including, baseball, basketball, football, swimming, tennis, volleyball and track teams participate in NCAA. The Shryrock Auditorium and the SIU Arena are some of famous event venues in Carbondale.

The Crab Orchard Lake, Devil's Kitchen Campground & Marina, First Baptist Church Of Carbondale, First Christian Church, Hundley House, Carbondale Fun Park are a few tourist attractions of the city.
