Carey Bell was born as Carey Bell Harrington on 14th November, 1936 in Mississippi. In his childhood days he was very much influence by Louis Jordan's music. Like Jordan he also wanted a saxophone, but Bell belonging to a poor family could not afford a saxophone. His family got a harmonica for him. But he soon became fan of many great players of blues harmonica such as Big Walter Horton, Sonny Boy Williamson, DeFord Bailey, and Marion "Little Walter" Jacobs. By the time he was eight Bell already became a good player of harmonica. At thirteen he was inducted in the Blues Band of Lovie Lee. In the 1950 Chicago was experiencing the emergence of blues scene. This led Lovie Lee to persuade Bell to go to Chicago. In the September of 1956 both of them went to Chicago. In Chicago Bell went to see Little Walter show in Club Zanzibar. Bell got a chance to learn the secrets of Blues harp from Little Walter. He also a got to chance to meet two other musical greats Big Walter Horton and Sonny Boy Williamson II. He learnt a lot from both of them. In 1969 Carey Bell released his first LP entitled ' Carey Bell's Blues Harp' on Delmark Records. Alligator Records in 1972 released ' Big Walter Horton with Carey Bell' for which Bell had worked with Big Walter. On the following year on ABC Bluesway a solo project of Bell was released. He also got a chance to work with Willie Dixon.

While spending considerable time at basements of other clubs like Biddy Mulligan's and Wise Fools. On 11th September 2004, Bells had a gig at Buddy Guy's Legends. In the show their album ' Second Nature' was released. In the album both father and son duo took turns on vocals and released a perfect album. For the album Matthew Skoller said " If you listen to the new record, it's a blueprint of how [Lurrie] was influenced by his dad's harmonica. You can hear his dad doing these syncopated riffs that are very sinewy and seamless; you can hear Lurrie imitating his father while he's playing back there. It's like they're talking to each other."
