Very few people in this world live even after they are gone. They leave their imprints for others to follow. Clifton Chenier was one such artist. That is why even today after 15 years of his death; he is still a celebrated artist. His legacy is one of the greatest influences on the Rock music. It is being well carried out by his son Clifton Chenier Jr. Multitude of followers prey on concert tickets espousing the special rock created by the father and added due credentials by the son.
Chenier was the unsurpassed performer of zydeco music, a combination of Cajun and Creole music with R&B, jazz, and blues influences. A colorful personality, shinning gold tooth and the cap and crown that he wore during concerts, distinguished Chenier from others. He became so popular in such a short time and set the standard for all the zydeco players to follow in his footsteps. Chenier himself explained his music style Zydeco as a blend of rock and French. In 1954, he signed with Elko Records and his first recording included seven tunes. Two singles among these became regional hits, "Cliston's Blues" and "Louisiana Stomp." Soon Chenier was to be a national hero. His illustrious career began in 1954, when he released "Clifton's Blues" that was a regional hit. "Ay 'Tite Fille (Hey, Little Girl)"soon followed it, which received normal success. Chenier toured widely in his entire career and added on the number of his followers wherever he went. For some time few of his releases did not do that well at the box office. He recorded thirteen songs between 1958 and 1960.
Artist Biography - Clifton Chenier
Next, Chenier signed to Arhoolie, producing his first album, Louisiana Blues and Zydeco and his first single, "Ay Yi Yi"/"Why Did You Go Last Night?" In 1976, Chenier came up with one of his best albums; "Bogalusa Boogie." With this he reached the peak of his popularity. In 1983 his star studded career was further enhanced when he became the first Creole to win a Grammy Award on national television for, "I'm Here," recorded in eight hours in Bogalusa, Louisiana. The next year, he had the privilege of performing at the White House. Although his health was fading out due to a kidney disease and a partially amputated foot, Chenier continued performing until a week before he died on December 12, 1987. Following his death, his son, C.J. Chenier, took over leadership of the Red Hot Louisiana Band. Chenier had performed at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, San Francisco Blues Festival and on Louisiana television. All these performances were later on released as a documentary on the great and talented artist of our times by Arhoolie.
Music flows in the blood of the entire Chenier family. First it was Chenier's father who taught him and his brother the basics of the instruments. Later on, after the former died, the grand legacy has been carried on by his son. The loss of the undisputed "King of Zydeco," was a big loss for music circuit and its lovers. But, fortunately the zydeco tradition is being carried foreword by his son and successor Clifton Chenier Jr. with a touring band and quality album releases.
