Background - Central Michigan Chippewas
The run and gun strategy worked with Kaman, but they fell apart without him. If coach Jay Smith thought last year was tough, wait till he sees his new team with four seniors departing. The guard play is a strength behind 6'-3' senior Tony Bowne (3 apg) and 6-3' junior Kevin Nelson (12 ppg). They also have 5'-6' junior Joe Carr (13 minutes pg), and some true freshmen could help out in the backcourt in 5'-10' Giordan Watson and 5'-11' Reynold Walters.
The frontcourt lacks experience and height. They have four lettermen back in 6'-6' Sefton Barrett, 6'-5' Robert Sevalia, 6'-8' Steve Harris, and 6'-8' Tom Pantlind. 6'-5' sophomore David Hoskins averaged 8 points per game as a freshman, which was third-best on the team. Hoskins had 18 points, and Bowne had 19 on 8-of-12 shooting in a 83-74 win over Northern Illinois.

 Barrett returns as the team's top rebounder after averaging 3.0 boards per game last season as a true freshman. Sevalia and Harris are both former JUCO transfer seniors who played limited roles last year and Pantlind is a fifth-year senior who's minutes have been sparse. All four are expected to make big contributions with the influx of new players.
The Chippewas have 6'-7' Justin Blevins and 6'-8' Jeff Bohnhoff redshirting and 6'-6' sophomore Eddie Spencer sitting out for academic reasons. The true freshmen who could help the frontcourt are 7'-1' Drew Walker and 6'-10' John Tiemeyer. This team was a poor 5-9 SU, 3-9 ATS at home and 1-15 SU/6-10 ATS on the road last season.
One of the few highlights last season was when Joe Carr nailed a 3-pointer at the buzzer as Central Michigan shocked No. 20 Notre Dame, 69-68. The Chippewas, who rallied from a five-point deficit in the final 20 seconds, trailed, 68-66, after Jordan Cornette made 1-of-2 free throws with four seconds left. But Carr nailed a shot from the top of the arc to stun the Fighting Irish. You won't see any upsets like that this season, as there are many new faces and a lot of work to do, especially on defense.
