Background - Brigham Young University Cougars
LaVell Edwards Stadium, with its 65,000-seat capacity, huge video scoreboards and immaculate press boxes, is home to legendary BYU football.
The original Cougar Stadium was built in 1964 with a seating capacity of 45,000 (including temporary bleachers placed at each of the end zones). It was expanded in 1982 to seat 65,000 in permanent seating areas and included 42 ticket gates. With the retirement of legendary head football coach LaVell Edwards after the 2000 season, the stadium was renamed in his honor.
Since its expansion in 1982, the stadium has consistently ranked among the nation's top 25 in attendance. Some of the stadium's well-known features include a box-bowl seating configuration, a grass playing surface and a four-level press box.
The Field
The field is covered with a sand-based natural turf capable of draining eight inches of rain per hour. The well-kept grass field is consistently deemed one of the best in the country.
Press Box
In 1982, 1988 and 1997 the Football Writers Association of America cited BYU for its "outstanding press box working area."
The LaVell Edwards Stadium press box has been named the "Provo Marriott" by the media who cover BYU football. Rising over 10 stories high, the four-level press box is located on the west side of the stadium and runs the entire length of the stands.
Levels one and two of the press box contain 42 private loges, each one equipped with 12 padded chairs, a television, radio, telephone, refrigerator, sink and game programs. The BYU President's box, which includes 163 padded chairs, five television sets and a buffet area, is also located on the first floor.
Level three is reserved for the print and electronic media along with all the game operators. The statistics, public address, sound and scoreboard controls are all located on the third level. Approximately 300 people work on the third level during games.
Level four is primarily used for television game filming.

Byu Cougars 2009 College Football Season Preview
|
 The BYU Cougars finished last season in third place in the Mountain West Conference. They had a 6-2 record in conference and a 10-2 record overall. The impressive record earned them an invitation to play the Arizona Wildcats in the Las Vegas Bowl. The Wildcats would win 31-12.
The 2009 preseason polls seem to have forgiven the Cougars for their loss and have them ranked 23rd in the ESPN Power Rankings and 24th in the USA Today Poll. BYU has a number of conference standouts. On offense they have quarterback Max Hall, running back Harvey Unga, and tight end Dennis Pitta and on defense they have defensive lineman Jan Jorgensen.
The offense may have three standouts, but they are three of the four returning starters. The receiving core is completely new and the offensive line has four new linemen. It helps to have a quarterback like Hall and a tight end that may be the best in college football, but inexperience is something that cannot be overlooked just because BYU has three great skill players.
The defense should be a little more solid. The 3-3-5 set has its sack master back and three returning starting linebackers. The secondary must deal with two new starting safeties, which is really quite important when your base defense has five defensive backs.
