The Citi BCS National Championship Game is the final game of the college football season that is meant to end all controversy and decide a definite champion that everyone can agree on. Of course, without a playoff system, there is always a controversy and the BCS National Championship has often ended with millions of fans, writers, and coaches frustrated. Still BCS National Championship Game tickets have always been the best college football tickets of the season.
The idea of single championship game has been floating around since college football became a national obsession. That game finally came in the 1999 college football season after the Bowl Alliance was finally able to woo the Big Ten and Pac 10. The result was the Bowl Championship Series (BCS). The selection system combined coaches' polls, writers' polls, and computer rankings to determine which teams truly belonged in the final game of the season.
The next issue, after the selection was where to play this national championship game. The BCS accepted the tradition that is so important to the game of college football and chose to rotate the game between four bowl locations: the Rose Bowl, the Sugar Bowl, the Fiesta Bowl, and the Orange Bowl. Up until the 2006 season the championship game actually replaced the normal match up, dismissing all normal conference tie ins. After 2006 the championship game was simply played at the stadium of the bowl game a week later.
This arrangement allowed the bowl games to honor their contracts and traditions. If a team finished in the top two spots then they did not play in the normal bowl game, rather the bowl chose the next team in the conference standings or an at-large team in some cases.
