The East Carolina Pirates represent the Conference USA. The Pirates went 6-6 overall and 5-3 in conference play under the direction of Coach Ruffin McNeil. The spread offense is pass happy with 319.3 passing yards a game, but still can run the ball when necessary, picking up 126.2 yards a game on the ground. The team scores 38.2 points a game and allows 43.4. No matter how prolific Quarterback Dominique Davis (3,699 yards, 36 touchdowns), wide receiver Dwayne Harris (93 receptions, 1,055 yards, 10 TD), wide receiver Lance Lewis (78 receptions, 979 yards, 13 touchdowns), and running back Jonathan Williams (846 rushing yards 10 rushing TD; 439 yards, 1 passing TD) are, the defense needs to find someway to stop Maryland from scoring to end the season with a win.
Maryland may be too much for East Carolina. The Terrapins finished the season 8-4 overall and 5-3 in the ACC. The Ralph Friedgen team finished second in the Atlantic Division in the ACC. Maryland managed to score 30.7 points a game with 217.5 passing yards and 124.9 rushing yards a game. The Terrapins defense kept the opposition to 22.3 points a game. Quarterback Danny O'Brien (2,257 yards and 21 TD), receiver Torrey Smith (65 receptions, 1,045 yards, 12 TD), and the trio of running backs are key to the Terrapins offensive game plan.
