The Mississippi State Bulldogs have been playing college football since 1895. Over the course of this history the Bulldogs have posted a losing record at 48.4 percent and can claim one division title, one conference title, and a national championship. The team from Starkville, Mississippi has been trying to improve its pedigree of late though. They do not want to be one of those SEC teams that have been the punching bags for the traditional powerhouses forever. The lone Bulldog championship is not a clear one. Mississippi State finished the 1940 season 10-1 and beat Georgetown 14-7 in the Orange Bowl. The controversy comes from the fact that neither the university nor any major athletic organization has claimed the Bulldogs were champions. The University of Minnesota is the officially recognized champion, but Mississippi State fans claim that the wins over Florida, Alabama, and Ole Miss are good enough, combined with the Orange Bowl win, to move from a national number 9 ranking to national champion. The Mississippi State Bulldogs are a different team in the 21st century. The coach is Dan Mullen. He has been in charge of the team for two seasons and has quickly made the Bulldogs a winning team, which has kept the Bulldogs fans happy at Davis Wade Stadium.
