Background - Wales National Rugby
The Welsh rugby union team represents the country at the national rugby union competition. Wales participates annually in the Six Nations Championship (23 times outright winners and 2005 champions) and in every World Cup after four years in which in 1987 being the hosts they were positioned at number 3,and also hosted in 1999. They are also a part of the British and Irish Lions. Though their performance lagged the charm for a few championships in the past, yet their resurgence in form in the 2000s has overshadowed the past. Today the team is recognized as being one of the most talented.

2006 Season Preview
|
 The Welsh Rugby Union formed to organize a match between England and Wales in 1881 at Glamorganshire. This match played on February 19, 1881 resulted in English victory, but soon the rugby union in Wales developed themselves to a high resulting in their being the most feared teams on international arena. In 1893 the Wales became champions for the first time. In its first twelve years the team went on winning the (then) British Championship for six times and then finished runners-up six times. They remained unbeaten at home between 1900 and 1913 and this glory was exemplified when they became the only side to defeat the All Blacks 'originals' in 1905 tour of the Home nations at Cardiff. Gwyn Nicholas and Rhys Gabe were the stars of that period.
In 1911 earned them their first official Grand Slam when they won all their matches in the British championship. In 1914 with the war in the rugby was suspended for four seasons. But the world war made them to wait for along gap to earn the second. Their dress is usually scarlet jerseys with the Prince of Wales's feathers, red socks and white shorts with the change strip (made by Reebok) being black currently. And the Cardiff brewery S A Brain is the shirt sponsor. The 'Brains' logo is replaced by 'Brawn' a style similar to the Brains logo. The 1920s saw a misfortune in their game. They regained their honor in 1931. It won the first championship in nine years beating England at Twickenham. Wales beat the touring All Blacks by in 1935. After the Second World War, Wales, in 1950 and 1952, got a resounding win over the touring All Blacks in 1953. The Cardiff Arms Park was officially declared the home of Welsh Rugby Union. In 1964, their coaching revolution began. The first National Coach, David Nash, was appointed in 1968.
The Welsh team of the 1970s is the best team of all time. The team's record speaks for itself. They won nine of the ten matches against England, and eight of the ten against the Scotland. The French were the only side to rival. By March 1979, Wales had won the Five Nations cup five times and the Grand Slam thrice. They picked up five Triple Crowns and defeated Australia twice. The 1971 match against Scotland was one of the most exciting ever played. Wales won 19-18.
Wales were a respected team by the time of the first official Rugby World Cup (1987). A win against England in the quarterfinals saw them taking on tournament favorites, New Zealand. Though they were defeated, yet beat the Australia side to get the third place.
The 90s were Wales' darkest period in rugby union terms. Professional defections to rugby league and internal struggles decimated the national side. Wales were wiped out of Rugby World Cup (1991). Things improved with the appointment Graham Henry as the coach. Wales entered as host nation into the 1999 edition Rugby World Cup with confidence. A runner-up spot in the inaugural European Rugby Cup (Cardiff) put them way to recovery. Wales distinguished themselves at the 2003 World Cup by routing New Zealand and England.
In 2005, Wales resurrected itself in the Six Nations cup. Coached by Mike Ruddock, the team opened with nail-biting win over England. Wales then defeated Ireland to win their first title since 1994 and first Grand Slam since 1978.Wales began the 2005 autumn season with a loss to Tri-Nations champs, New Zealand without several key players playing. But they improved their performance against South Africa. A win over Australia marked its 125th anniversary.
