William Count Basie was born on the 21st August 1904 in Red Bank ,New Jersey. His association with music began with piano lessons by his mother. He was an American jazz pianist. He toured the T.O.B.A(Theatre Owner's Bookers Association) ,Vaudeville circuit from the year 1924.He played solo as well as provided accompaniment to the blues singers. In 1928 he joined Walter Page's Blue Devils. In the year 1929 he went on to become the pianist in the Benie Moten band in Kansas.
His own band was formed in 1934 but didn't go on for long and he rejoined the Bennie Moten band .After the death of Bennie Moten in the year 1935 the band got disbanded and Basie formed his own band with some members of the Moten band and started being referred to as Count Basie. His orchestra proved to be a success and was appreciated wherever they played. He showed strong leadership skills and was a great bandleader and organizer. He led his orchestra till he succumbed to pancreatic cancer in Florida on the 26th of April 1984.The Count Basie orchestra played with a number of eminent Blues and jazz singers and was lauded for their great talent and music. They played with the likes of Frank Sinatra and for some of his best selling albums like "Sandra at the sands" and "It might as well be Swing".
