As soon as Holland moved to London, he started weekly lessons with James E. Merrit, the famous bassist of the London philharmonic Orchestra. Merrit recommended him to the Guildhall School of Music and Drama to the degree program. At Guildhall, Holland came to know many things, various styles of playing the bass, from the art of playing orchestral music to New Orleans Jazz and so on. In 1966, he started working with famous musicians like saxophonist John Surman, trumpeter Kenny Wheeler, and pianist John Taylor. Miles Davis heard him performing at Ronnie Scott Club and asked Holland to be a member of his band. Holland immediately grabbed the opportunity he was looking for and moved to New York. He recorded and toured with Miles for the next two years.
In the late nineties he left Miles and with Chick Corea, Barry Atschul and Anthony Braxton he founded the group Circle. After working together for a year they parted and Holland joined Stan Getz' group. In the meantime Holland also worked with Thelonius Monk and Sam Rivers. In 1972, Holland released his first album as a leader titled "Conference of the Birds". In 1977, Holland recorded his solo bass album entitled ".Emerald Tears". His solo violoncello album "Life Circle" was recorded in 1982. After that he founded his full time working band named "A Quintet'. Steve Ellington, Julian Priester, Steve Coleman and Kenny Wheeler belonged to the first version of the group members while later members included Robin Eubanks and Marvin Smitty Smith. In 1990, Holland made world tour with the Parallel Realities group. Besides, with a tour of Europe in 1993 where he performed solo hits, he won millions of hearts.
