The talented Delano Floyd McCoury was known to be born in Bakersville area of North Carolina on February 1 in the year 1939. At a young age, the McCoury the whole family relocated north. It was just above the famous Mason-Dixon Line in splendid York County, Pennsylvania. Apparently it was his older brother who actually introduced the young Del to delightful bluegrass through the amazing music of Flatt and Scruggs. He easily learned to play delectable music from his older brother, and they always listened to the tunes of Grand Ole Opry. In the year 1950, his elder brother bought some 78 RPMs, and amongst them were Flatt and Scruggs.

After he listened to them playing the popular 'Rolling in My Baby's Arms,' he just could not just leave that record alone. Del was so thoroughly impressed by the elements bluegrass music that he soon decided to take up the playing the banjo. Although many members of the large extended McCoury family were very well versed, in old-time music and the remarkable claw-hammer style, however finding pickers who were familiar with the upcoming and then-new Scruggs style proved quite a difficult task. One of Del's very early musical partners was the talented Keith Daniels, who incidentally was a native North Carolinian who was then living in Maryland. The pair appeared together on local radio with the famous Stevens Brothers, and then went on to found Keith Daniels and the famous Blue Ridge Partners in the year 1958. During the early fifties and till late sixties, the splendid Baltimore area was a actually a breeding ground for remarkable bluegrass talent. Del along with his younger brother Jerry started working in the popular Baltimore honky-tonks along with the charismatic Franklin County Boys and then with the likes of Jack Cooke's Virginia Playboys.
