Dreamgirls

Dreamgirls is an award-winning Broadway musical, which opened on December 20, 1981 at the Imperial Theater on Broadway. It did 1522 performances. The musical is about the story of all-girls singing trio, who are from Chicagocalled "The Dreams", who became the first superstars. The music of the show is by Henry Krieger and lyrics and book by Tom Eyen. The play was directed by Michael Bennett, produced by Bennett, Bob Avian, and Geffen Records, and choreographed by Bennett and Michael Peters. The original Broadway production which won six Tony Awards, starred Jennifer Holiday, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Loretta Devine, Ben Harney, Cleavant Derricks and Obba Babatunde.
Dream Works Pictures and Paramount Pictures are in process adapting the play into a motion picture which is set to release on December 25, 2006. Jamie Foxx, Beyonce Knowels, Eddie Murphy, Danny Glover and Jennifer Hudson are suppose to be starred in the feature film version of the Dreamgirls.
The play begins in 1962, when a hopeful black girl group from Chicago, The Dreamettes, participate in a talent hunt competitions at the Apollo Theater in NY. These three girls-full figured lead singers Effie White and her group mates and best friends, Deena Jones and Lorrell Robinson, meet Curtis Taylor, Jr, who is as hady car salesman, later who becomes their manager. Curtis convinces James "Thunder" Early, a popular R&B star, and his manager, Marty, to cast the Dreamettes as his backup singers, after he has been ditched by his original backup. Curtis gives the group a new name, The Dreams and with help from Effie's songwriter brother C.C. Helps them to step in to mainstream. During this process Curtis falls in love with Effie. Disagreements leads to conflicts between Marty and Curtis, when Curtis moves on Marty's turf: Jimmy Early. Marty resigns from his post as managers and is replaced by Curtis.

by the mid of 1960's Curtis decides to maker Deena the lead singer of the Dreams, just to add more pop appeal to her act. After being replaced by Deena, Effie becomes resentful and her frustration grows stronger into anger when she observes Curtis increasing affection and inclination towards Deena. With the passing time, by the end of 1960's Effie had sunken into depression. Curtis replaces her from the team with Michelle Morris, although Effie is pregnant with Cutis' child, which is not revealed till quite late.
With Morris, the Dreams-- again renamed as "Deena Jones & the Dreams". They proceed to record several successful pop hits. At the same time Effie is struggling to her solo career. By the dawn of 1970, Deena wishes to quit the act and establish herself as actress. Lorrell is involved in to a complicated and difficult relationship with James Early. Effie finally achieves the success and fame she had been wanting, undeterred by Curtis' underhanded attempts to suppress the release of her solo hit "One Night Only" by having the Dreams record and released it. After the confrontation with Effie, C.C, and Marty Deena and Lorrell comes to know about the real character of Curtis and decide to disband the Dreams. In 1972, the group makes their farewell appearance, its then when they reunite with Effie, resulting in a happy ending.
