Drivin N Cryin is a hard-rock band the plays Southern-inspired music. The band originated from Atlanta in 1985 could not gain national level recognition but was hugely popular in southern areas with college towns like Georgia, Albama, South Carolina and North Carolina. In the beginning, band played variety of music ranging from punk, hard-rock, and metal to country, folk and acoustic ballads. This type of variation was mostly loved by the hard-core fans of the band, but was not the choice of record labels and radio programmers.
Drivin N Cryin's original line up included a singer/ songwriter Kevin Kinney on guitar and vocals, Tim Nielsen on bass guitar and Paul Lenz on drums. In 1986, the band came up with their first album Scarred But Smarter, on 688 Records. The album was showcase of southern rock with bluegrass mixed in appropriate proportion. Following this album was another in row, Whisper Tames the Lion, in 1988 for Island. By this time Lenz was out from and the group and Jeff Sullivan was his replacement.
There was bright hope for the band at the time due to the success of R.E.M; all things Southern were tipped to become the next big thing. But Drivin N Cryin's uniquely southern twist on rock was lost on the rest of the world. With the addition of Mystery Road, along with R.E.M guitar roadie Buren Fowler on lead guitar, the band's style and theme were not altered that much. In 1990, with For Fly Me Courageous, the band finally took on the heavy metal mental and winded up with good hard rock records, with odd folk track thrown in. The final product was perhaps shocking and less than fashionable. The band did intensive touring mostly around the south, drawing an enthusiastic, college are audience. The most remarkable was the show in Atlanta where the audience was singing along and actually drowning out Kinney's own unusually strong voice. The same year Kenny recorded "Acoustic Folk" LP Mac Dougal for Island. In 1993, Drivin N Cryin's Smoke got released. With the release of this album band's contract with the label got finished. Following the success story came a solo album "Down Out Law" by Kinney in 1994. He accompanied his solo release with his touring with R.E.M guitarist Peter Buck, who was also the producer of his first album. Simultaneously he and band were bridging the gap between its fifth and sixth records performing acoustic dates throughout the south. On May 21, 2006, the band received its biggest shock as one of the group member, John David Nielsen died of natural cause ion his sleep

By this time Fowler had left, Joe Huffman was no more associated with band, and the band was a forgotten history. Kinney, Nielsen and Sullivan held haunting cover to the Beatles song "Let It Be" recorded in New York City on September 12, 2001. at present Kenney's primarily focused on his solo career, but the Drivin N Cryin still performs live dates but mostly in south.
