‘East Yorkshire’ borough was one of the nine local government districts of Humberside County of the UK from April 1, 1974 to April 1, 1996. This district was formed as North Wolds. It was renamed by a resolution of the council on February 1, 1981.
This district came into fore under the Local Government Act of 1972. The region became an amalgamation of a number of areas that were earlier under the possession of Yorkshire County and its administration alongside East Riding. The district was merged with the new East Riding of Yorkshire local government. The revamped one is bigger in area.
Humberside remained a non-metropolitan county of England from April 1, 1974 to April 1, 1996. County Hall at Beverley was the county headquarters of council. It was inherited from the East Riding. Its biggest and only settlement was on Kingston city upon the Hull. North Yorkshire bordered it in north and west, South Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire to its southwest and Lincolnshire to its extreme south. The North Sea is at its east. It was abolished on April I, 1996 in the local government terms with the inception of four unitary authorities including North Lincolnshire, North East Lincolnshire, Kingston upon Hull and East Riding of Yorkshire.
This district had covered former county boroughs of Grimsby and Kingston upon Hull. It incorporated the boroughs of Cleethorpes and Scunthorpe from Lindsey – as the urban districts of Barton-upon-Humber and Brigg – and the rural districts of Glanford Brigg, Grimsby and Isle of Axholme. It took boroughs of Beverley, Bridlington, Hedon, and the urban districts of Driffield, Haltemprice, Hornsea and Withernsea from East Riding and rural districts of Beverley, Bridlington, Driffield, Holderness, Howden, Pocklington, whereas it took both boroughs of Goole and rural district of Goole from West Riding.
No directly-analogous area had been proposed in Redcliffe-Maud Report. A White Paper, as proposed, didn’t include a cross-Humber authority, either with the northern part forming ‘East Yorkshire’ area and southern area forming Lincolnshire area. The district was finally abolished in 1996.
