‘Edinburg’ city in Hidalgo County of Texas is a county seat of the USA. As a major city of the McAllen–Edinburg–Mission Metropolitan Statistical Area, it includes Hidalgo County in its administration. This city is home to the University of Texas-Pan American and the Edinburg Coyotes.

John Closner, William Briggs, Argyle McAllen, Plutarco de la Viña and Dennis B. Chapin collectively developed this city in 1908. This town was named after Chapin in his honour. It was renamed to Edinburg later to honour a prominent businessman of Edinburgh in Scotland. This city was officially incorporated in 1919.

According to 2000 census reports, it has 48,465 inhabitants, 14,183 households and 11,417 families. The population density of this city is 1,296.9 people per 500.7/km². It has 16,031 housing units at an average density of 165.6/km². Its racial makeup is 73.32% Whites, 0.58% African Americans, 0.47% Native Americans, 0.65% Asians, 0.04% Pacific Islanders, 22.67% from other races and 2.27% from two or more races.

Out of its 14,183 households, Edinburg has 46.9% children under the age of 18, who reside in the family system, 56.9% are married couples living together, 19.0% has a female householder minus husbands and 19.5% are non-families. 15.4% of all the households are single and 5.5% has someone living alone, and are 65 years of age or above. The average household size is 3.29 and the average family size is 3.71.

Edinburg’s 33.0% population is under the age of 18. Its 13.1% population is 18 to 24 years of age, whereas 29.8% are from 25 to 44, 15.9% are from 45 to 64 and 8.2% are of 65 years of age or above. The median age of this city is 27 years. Its sex ratio is 95.3 males for every 100 females, whereas it has 90.5 males for every 100 females aged 18 and above. Total area of this city is 37.4 square miles, of which 37.4 square miles is land and 0.1 square miles is water.
