The city of ‘Elizabeth’ is a Union County of New Jersey in the USA. The English settlers had founded this city in 1664 and named it after the wife of Sir George Carteret, not Queen Elizabeth I as many presumes. This city was also called ‘Elizabethtown’ and a part of the Elizabethtown Tract. It was the first capital of New Jersey. The city had been invaded regularly by the British forces during the American Revolutionary War.

Elizabeth was created by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 13, 1855. This city became part of the newly formed Union County on March 19, 1857. Its first major industry was Singer Sewing Machine Company that employed approximately 2,000 workers. It had one of the first car companies in 1895. The Electric Carriage and Wagon Company was founded here that manufactured Electrobat. It was sooner joined by another electric car builder, Riker.

This city has a total area of 35.4 km², of which 31.6 km² is land and 3.7 km² is water. According to 2000 census, its total population is 120,568 inhabitants that make it the fourth largest city of New Jersey in terms of population. It has 40,482 households and 28,170 families. Its population density is 3,809.5/km², and it has 42,838 housing units at an average density of 1,353.5/km². Its racial makeup is 49.78% Whites, 19.98% African Americans, 0.48% Native Americans, 2.35% Asians, 0.05% Pacific Islanders, 15.51% from other races and 5.86% from two or more races. The Hispanic or Latino population and or from any of the races is 55.46%.

Although, this city grew in parallel to its sister city of Newark for many years, it has been more successful in retaining the middle class presence. It spared riots in the 1960s. The city is bordered by Linden in southwest, by Roselle and Roselle Park in west, by Union and Hillside in northwest, by Newark in north and by Bayonne and Staten Island, New York in the east.
