‘Elkton’ city in Maryland, the USA is a county seat of Cecil County. This city was earlier famous as Head of Elk due to its identity of being the head of navigation on the Elk River that flows into the Chesapeake Bay.

This city was once famous as Gretna Green of the West due to its popularity as a place for eloping couples to marry. The trend continued until a state rule of law was introduced in 1938 that required a couple to wait for 48-hour. This city is famous for having lots of wedding chapels. Famous actors Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller were married here in its Main Street Chapel.

According to 2000 census, this city has total population of 11,893. Its population density is 1,480.5 people per square mile. It has 4,743 housing units at an average density of 590.4/sq mi. Its racial makeup is 85.85% Whites, 9.64% African Americans, 0.32% Native Americans, 1.17% Asians, 0.04% Pacific Islanders, 0.78% from other races and 2.20% from two or more races. Its Hispanic race is 2.97% of the total population.

The sex ratio of this city is 91.9 males for every 100 females. It has 87.0 males for every 100 females aged 18 and above.

This city has historical significance as well. George Washington and Rochambeau stopped in Elkton on September 6-7, 1781 with their combined forces while they were on their way to Yorktown. Maryland was still autonomous when several northern states had begun passing restrictive marriage laws in the early 20th Century.

This was one of the reasons that many cities of Maryland, which would border with other states, became famous as the places to get married quickly and without many restrictions – they turned into Gretna Greens – Elkton being the northeastern county seat in Maryland was particularly famous. Although a 48-hour waiting period was introduced in 1938, Elkton remained to be a place to elope – it just maintained the trend.
