Emden Information: Tickets, Venues, Events and More

‘Emden’ is a city cum seaport on the Ems River in the northwest Germany. It is the major city of East Frisia. There is no historical record of the exact foundation date of Emden. It is presumed that this city existed since 8th century.

Its earlier names are Amuthon, Embda, Emda and Embden. It was one of the richest cities of 17th century. Large number of Dutch immigrants used to inhibit here. Emden once became a center of reformed Protestantism and produced the first Dutch translation of Bible. This city was encircled by East Frisia and parts of the short-lived Kingdom of Holland during the Napoleonic French era.

Emden developed tremendously with industrialization process that began around 1870. Its paper mill and heavy shipyard industries turned it into an industrial hub. A big canal named Dortmund-Ems Canal was constructed here by the end of 19th century that connected Emden with the Ruhr area. By then Emden had already emerged as a ‘seaport of the Ruhr area’ that remained active until 1970.

A big shipyard was founded here in 1903 that still exists. The allied bombing raids had almost wiped out the main city of this region during the Second World War. It destroyed an array of historic buildings. Repeated bombings took place here on September 6, 1944. This city was ultimately reconstructed and opened on September 6, 1962.

The recently built German Navy frigate, Emden was built in 1980. It is operational from 1983. This is first of the five ships that is named after that city. A deep sea spot in the Pacific Ocean close to the Philippines is named after the ‘second’ Emden ship. It is therefore called Emdentief in German.

The village of Emden was named after Emden as large chunk of emigrants migrated to this village in the northwestern Logan County of Illinois from Emden. According to 2006 census reports, this city has a total population of 51,692.
