‘Ennis’ is a city in Ellis County of Texas in the USA. Houston & Texas Central Railroad purchased 647 acres of land in Ellis County in 1871 to establish its northern terminus. This site was ultimately established as the City of Ennis on May 8, 1872.

An early official of the Houston & Texas Central Railroad, Cornelius Ennis was a namesake of this city. Ennis has the widest main street in America rather in the world. It is combination of two separate streets – each of them on the opposite sides of the railroad track. This city is renowned for holding an annual National Polka Festival featuring food, music, dancing and a parade through downtown.

Ennis has its unique distinction of being the only incorporated city in the USA that still elects its City Marshal. The election process is held after a gap of every two years. Its winner is named as Chief of Police by both City Council and City Manager.

According to 2000 census, Ennis has 16,045 inhabitants, 5,335 households and 3,947 families who reside in the city circles. Its population density is 891.7 people per square mile. The city has 5,618 housing units at an average density of 312.2/sq mi. Its racial makeup is 66.57% Whites, 14.71% African Americans, 0.47% Native Americans, 0.29% Asians, 0.01% Pacific Islanders, 15.93% from other races, 2.03% from two or more races and 33.19% from Hispanic or Latino race.

Ennis’ 38.1% households has children under the age of 18 living with their families, 54.4% are married couples living together, 14.5% has a female householder without husbands and 26.0% are non-families. 22.8% of all the households are individuals and 10.1% has someone living alone and is of 65 years of age or above.
