Eric Idle studied English from Pembroke College at the University of Cambridge. While studying at Pembroke College he received and an invitation for joining the Cambridge University Footlights Club by his fellow students and the President of the Footlights Club, Tim Brooke-Taylor and a member of Footlights Club, Bill Oddie. Eric said 'I'd never heard of the Footlights when I got there, but we had a tradition of college smoking-concerts, and I sent in some sketches parodying a play that had just been done. Tim Brooke-Taylor and Bill Oddie auditioned me for the Footlights smoker, and that led to me discovering about and getting into the Footlights, which was great.' In 1965 Eric became the president of Footlights.
After Monty Python went off-air all the six members of the group started their own individual careers. First solo project of Idle was called 'Radio Five' on BBC Radio One show. Idle played all the multi-tracked parts apart from performing sketches and links to records. He earned lot of critical acclaim when he along with Neil Innes formed the 'The Rutles' a pre-fab-four group. The group was an impersonation of Beatles. The Rutles was written by Idle and the music given by Neil Innes. It came on the Rutland Weekend Television which was a a sketch show on BBC2. Eric Idle further gained more recognition among audience and critics by doing projects of other artist. In 1989 he came on 'The Adventures of Baron Munchausen' directed and written by Terry Gilliam. In 1990 he was seen on ' Nuns on the Run' along with Robbie Coltrane and in 1995 he appeared in 'Casper'. However in his own projects like movie 'Splitting Heirs' did not go well with critics as well the audience.
Eric Idle apart from acting has also written many fictional and non-fictional books like Hello Sailor, The Quite Remarkable Adventures of the Owl and the Pussycat, The Greedy Bastard Tour Souvenir Program, The Greedy Bastard Diary, The Rutland Dirty Weekend Book, The Road to Mars. He is also credited for writing and co-writing music and lyrics for Monty Python's Spamalot a musical. The musical received Tony Award for Best Musical of the 2004-05 season when played at Broadway.
