The XIII Encuentro Internacional del Mariachi, or as we refer to it, the Mariachi Festival, and it is regarded as the biggest and best festival in the world and Mariachi groups come from all over the world (including Japan) to participate in this festival. Mariachi are actually Mexican street musicians. They are usually a group that consists of at least two violins, two trumpets, one Spanish guitar, one vihuela (a high-pitched, five-string guitar) and one guitarrón (a small-scaled acoustic bass), but it can feature more than twenty musicians also. They dress in wide brimmed hats and studded charro suits and they sing songs that speak of love, betrayal, death, politics, machismo and revolutionary heroes. In the 19th century, many of them were nomadic laborers who moved from estate to another. But when revolution broke out many of them started wandering from town to town singing songs that included the message of revolutions and enemies and other news related to it. With the advent of radio and television their popularity grew and mariachis can now be found all over Latin America.
