When asked about the writing experience, David Cave says: "At the time I began writing the show I'd also been doing a lot of lyric writing for the band The Jazz Passengers who had begun recording albums and performing concerts with a wide array of great guest vocalists. I loved writing songs and working with singers. I began my career as a singer and a songwriter, but I'd never written songs for my own shows. So I thought, I'll make the show not just about two singers but two people who write their own songs and I asked the composer Jonathan Kreisberg, who had scored my show Betwixt, to work with me on the music. Originally the show was going to be about Floyd's relationship with an aspiring young male songwriter. I worked on this idea for a year and never really got anywhere. In my head I thought it worked, but when it actually came to writing not much came out. Then one day it hit me. It isn't a boy, it's a girl! When I realized that, Clea was born, and she and Floyd and the whole story started taking on a life of their own."
