Until 1979 the Gatlin Brothers didn't officially form. But the three brothers were continuously performing at various venues-right from the church to several local Texas television shows. In their teens the three Gatlin Brothers recorded a religious album for the Sword & Shield label. Following high-school graduation, Larry Gatlin headed off to the University of Houston. There he joined the gospel group named the Imperials. With the Imperials Larry performed in Las Vegas. In Las Vegas Larry met Dottie West, who was so impressed with Larry's songwriting talents. Subsequently Larry Gatlin recorded two of his songs, "Once You Were Mine," and "You're the Other Half of Me". Then Larry moved to Nashville and came to see that his demo tapes had been already circulated there. Kris Kristofferson played Larry's demo tape in front of Fred Foster, executive of Monument Records. Foster was heavily impressed with the tape and gave a contract to Larry in 1972. In the same time Larry invited his two brothers to join him in Nashville to form a backing group. Larry released his debut album "The Pilgrim" with backings by his two brothers. The album included their first country hit "Sweet Becky Walker."

The third album "Gatlin With Family and Friends" included the the first top ten hit "Broken Lady". In early 1976, the track peaked # 5 position. In the later part of 1976 Gatlin Brothers became members of the Grand Ole Opry. Gatlin's fourth album "High Time" hit the market in 1977. The Gatlin Brothers releasing one more solo album, before they were officially credited as Larry's backing band as of 1979.
Throughout the '80s, the Gatlin Brothers gave a string of 15 Top 40 hits, which included "The Lady Takes the Cowboy Everytime", "Houston (Means I'm One Day Closer to You)," "Denver," and "She Used to Be Somebody's Baby." During this time all of their recordings were released under a variety of names, such as Larry & the Gatlin Brothers, Larry & the Gatlin Brothers Band, and Larry, Steve, Rudy: The Gatlin Brothers.
By the end of the decade, Gatlin Brothers' popularity began to decline because of the arrival of the new traditionalist performers. In 1991, the group performed a farewell tour and retired.
