Born on November 28, 1934 in Argentina Gato Barbieri is the second master of jazz music right after the jazz king Lalo Schifrin. His real name was El Gato Barbieri. Gato Barbieri is popular not only as a jazz artist but also as a master saxophonist and composer. Barbieri's musical journey started with the great Lalo Schifrin. As a teenager Barbieri used to perform in Lalo Schifrin's band. Born to a family of musicians, Gato Barbieri began to play music just after he heard Charlie Parker's "Now's the Time." By the early 1960s, while Gato Barbieri was in Rome, he played tenor saxophone with trumpeter Don Cherry. Gato Barbieri was greatly influenced by John Coltrane's late recordings. He also got tremendous inspiration from saxophonists Pharoah Sanders and Albert Ayler. Barbieri's warm and gritty tone became the trademark of his music. In the late 1960s, he fused South American music into his playing. He went on winning a Grammy for his music score for Bernardo Bertolucci's film "Last Tango in Paris". Following his tremendous work with Bernardo Bertolucci's film, Barbieri got a record deal with the famous Impulse! Records. That was just the start. Gato Barbieri is old today. But his zest for music hasn't lessened. From time to time he performs live concerts in the country. We avail Gato Barbieri concert tickets at very attractive rates. In his early years, Gato Barbieri used to play the traditional Latin rhythms. It was only in the 1960s he experimented with the jazz genre. His experiment with jazz became successful as he went on giving some superb jazz works in his initial efforts. In the 1970s he was deeply influenced by the South American influences and tried out his luck at pop and fusion. North American audiences first heard him when he had been a wild bull, sporting a coarse, lamenting Pharoah/John Coltrane/ Sanders-influenced tone. However, by the mid-1970s, Barbieri's tone and approach began to mellow to some extent with ballads like "What a Diff'rence a Day Makes" and Carlos Santana's "Europa." Still, regardless of the formulation in which he works, Barbieri has always been an overtly emotional tenor sax soloists.
Artist Biography - Gato Barbieri
Barbieri got his musical influence right at his home. His family included many musicians. However, until he attained the age of 12, he didn't take up a musical instrument. It was Charlie Parker's "Now's the Time" which encouraged him to study the clarinet. In 1947, Barbieri moved to the Argentinian capital Buenos Aires. There he continued his private music lessons and began to learn the alto sax. By 1953 Gato Barbieri began to perform in the Schifrin orchestra. Later in the 1950s, Gato Barbieri switched to tenor sax and started leading his own groups. In 1962, he moved to Rome with his Italian -born wife. In 1963 Gato Barbieri met Don Cherry in Paris. Gato Barbieri joined his band and got exposure in the jazz avant-garde. In the 1960s Gato Barbieri got the opportunity to play with Mike Mantler's Jazz Composers' Orchestra. His fierce tone can be beautifully heard in "Hotel Overture" of Carla Bley's magnificent work "Escalator Over the Hill." Since then Gato Barbieri has been constantly involved in many musical projects.
Gato Barbieri stopped singing for some years following his triple-bypass surgery and his wife Michelle's death. But in 1997, he returned to action and performed with the same zest as earlier. He performed in Los Angeles in the Playboy Jazz Festival and recorded "Que Pasa" for Columbia. In 1999 and 2002 Gato Barbieri released two albums entitled "Che Corazon" and "Shadow of the Cat" respectively. Are you interested in watching Gato Barbieri live concerts? Order your tickets from us.
