Gene Loves Jezebel was originally called Slav Aryan. During the 1980s the two Aston brothers started the band with guitarist Ian Hudson and a drum machine. Though the Astons grew up in Porthcawl situated in South Wales, in 1981 they moved to London. There they renamed the band as Gene Loves Jezebel. The trio began to play at several live shows and the famous Situation 2 signed them up. Gene Loves Jezebel released their demo single "Shavin' My Neck " with Situation 2 in May 1982. The band then recruited drummer Dick Hawkins and bassist Julianne Regan. But Regan left the band soon to form All About Eve. In 1984, Peter Rizzo joined as the new bassist of Gene Loves Jezebel. Hawkins also left the band for some time. When he left John Murphy and later Steve Goulding joined Gene Loves Jezebel. But in 1983 Hawkins returned again.
