Born Georgios (Yorgos) Kyriacos Panayiotou on June 25, 1963 in Finchley, London, England, the artist known worldwide as George Michael had his introduction to the music business as part of the first million-selling duo Wham!, the most commercially successful, teen-orientated band of the 80s. His time with Wham came to an end in 1986 and the singer began a transformation from a teen idol to a sex god. He had experimented with this persona with the song "Careless Whisper" in 1984, and took it to a new level after he went solo.

Before this transition could be complete, George Michael reinvented himself as a Club Tropicana playboy. His first solo cut, "A Different Corner" followed in "Careless Whisper's" footsteps, touching on not just debauchery, but also a more mature songwriting style. The addition of a duet with Aretha Franklin ("I Knew You Were Waiting") made it clear to those fans in the United States the Tiger Beat boy had grown up, a point made even more clear by the single ""I Want Your Sex". The song proved so provocative daytime radio banned it. However, George Michael returned to the top of the charts with the song "Faith". The album and the song were the first in a series of three internationally platinum albums. Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1 and Older and the hits "Somebody to Love", "Killer", "Jesus to a Child", and "Fastlove" signaled the end of his brief tenure on top of the pop world.

Though he had reinvented himself as a sex symbol, he grew tiresome of his inability to transition into a period in which the world would take him seriously. He shut down contact with the media and his album Songs from the Last Century struggled to inspire fans outside of the UK. A court battle also ensued between the George Michael and the record label. Michael portrayed himself as a pop slave. Ultimately, George Michael bought out his contract and seemed to go into hiding, though not until starting his own label and being outed as a homosexual after being charged with "lewd behavior" in a toilet stall in Beverly Hills.

The singer returned to the charts in March 2002 with the one-off single "Freeek!", which was accompanied by a risqué‚ £1 million video. He courted controversy again a few months later, baiting US President George W. Bush and UK Prime Minister Tony Blair with "Shoot The Dog". The single's poor chart showing (only reaching number 12) indicated Michael's commercial star was very much on the wane. Yet, he pushed forward and released the album Patience in 2004.
