Gilberto Santa Rosa started in Puerto Rico along with a group of amateurs in 1976. He did his first recording with Mario Ortiz Orchestra. While working with it he got the chance to meet Mr. Elias Lopés who helped in polishing and molding a very proposing young singer. In 1980 Santa Rosa with Puerto Rico All Stars recorded "Homenaje a Eddie Palmieri" and later got an opportunity to record with Tommy Olivencia. For five years between 1981 to 1986 he recorded six albums with Willie Rosario Orchestra.
Later he signed with Combo Records of Ralph Cartagena. With Combo Records Santa Rosa released three albums which included " De Amor y Salsa". In 1990 he released " Punto De Vista" a salsa romantica set. The album was released on CBS Records and achieved lot of commercial success with songs like "Vivir Sin Ella" and "Perdoname".

In 1990 Santa Rosa performed in all star project of band leader Don Perignon "La Puertorriqueña" where he got the chance to preform with two great contemporary soneros Andy Montañez and Pedro Brull. Same year he also received as the Best Male Singer the Billboard Lo Nuestro award. Santa Rosa also showcased his talent in prestigious yearly salsa festival held in New York. 1990 was also year of his acting debut along with Rafo Muñiz and Luis Vigoreaux in a play "La pareja dispareja". In 1991 his " Perspectiva" with CBS/Sony proved to be another smash hit.
In 1995 Santa Rosa got a chance to visit Japan as musical ambassador of Puerto Rico. There he sang his song "De cara al viento" in Japanese aimed at bridging the cultural barriers. His visit to Japan established him on the international platform, giving him a reputation as a most sought after salsa artist. In 1976 he released an album titled " Esencia" proving to be bother major hit. It featured hit song like "No Quiero Nada Regala'o." In 1997 he performed with Andy Montañez in the Lincoln Center of New York. In the Universal Studios Amphitheater in Hollywood he was seen with Olga Tañon.
1999 was marked by another album release by Santa Rosa . The album was called " Expresión" which reinforced his international fame.
