Given that its debut took place in 2003, the Deutsche Bank Championship is one of the newer tournaments on the PGA Tour. It is played at the Tournament Players Club of Boston in Norton, Massachusetts. Unlike most tournaments, this tournament is intended to end on a Monday, and always scheduled for Labor Day weekend.
The Deutsche Bank Championship has been the second tournament of the FedExCup "playoffs" as of 2007, with the 2010 Deutsche scheduled for September 3-6, 2010 over its customary Labor Day weekend, Monday finish. Something Deutsche Bank ticketholders can most likely bank on is that, as long as he is physically able, you will see Tiger Woods playing in this event, since the Tiger Woods Foundation is one of the primary charitable beneficiaries of the tournament.
The purse for the 2009 Deutsche Bank Championship was $7,500,000, with $1,350,000 going to the winner, Steve Stricker, who birdied the 71st hole to catch co-leaders Jason Dufner and Scott Verplank, who were already in the clubhouse. Stricker then birdied the last hole to overtake the two, avoiding a three-way playoff and winning his third PGA Tour event of 2009.
In 2008, Vijay Singh posted a new tournament scoring record of 262 while also becoming the first two-time winner of this event (2004, 2008). Singh finished with a 63, the lowest final-round score, and pulled away from the other leaders to eventually beat Mike Weir by five strokes.
In 2003, the Deutsche Bank Championship debuted to capacity crowds, setting the PGA Tour charity record for a first year event, having raised $1.5 million for the Tiger Woods Foundation and several other New England charities. Adam Scott was the winner of the inaugural event in 2003 with his 20-under-par tournament score of 264.
